Hemorrhoids Surgery is usually used as a last resort because most hemorrhoids do not get bad enough that surgery is required. If the hemorrhoids become prolapsed or thrombsed, and the patient is experiencing severe discomfort, surgery can be performed. The hemorrhoids can be surgically removed while the patient is sedated (sleepy) and a local anesthesia is used for pain. The enlarged vein is removed and a gauze packing is inserted to reduce bleeding. Smaller hemorrhoids are "banded".

This is a procedure where a small rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid, which causes the hemorrhoid tissue to diet and  fall off as a result of lack of blood flow. Many of these procedures can be done as an outpatient or an office procedure with minimal or no anesthesia.
