External hemorrhoids will occur outside your rectum and around your anus. All swelling and/or protruding masses near on or near the anal opening are considered to be external hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids are caused when the veins of your anus swell due to too much pressure. Treatment possibilities for external hemorrhoids can include ice packs, topical ointments (like preparation H) warm salt baths (e.g. sitz baths), suppositories and loose underwear.
