Bleeding hemorrhoids are most commonly associated with external hemorrhoids.

External hemorrhoids will often develop around the rim of your anus and can be painful and very sensitive. When an external hemorrhoid ruptures, it will sometimes bleed and the patient will usually see blood in the toilet or on toilet paper. In more severe cases a blood clot can form, and the hemorrhoid will become thrombosed.

There are various methods used to get rid of external hemorrhoids such as topical creams and lotions which at first reduce swelling and inflammation, and given enough time can help dry out the hemorrhoid. If the hemorrhoid does indeed become thrombosed, rubber band ligation can be performed by a doctor. Rubber band ligation is where two small rubber bands are put at the base of the hemorrhoid and given enough time will strangulate (cut off circulation) the hemorrhoid, and the hemorrhoid will die and fall off.
